Orkia in Blue Water

Another adventure...The day before we went out, Josh assisted me in trying to straighten the mast. I had dropped the mast twice. Once with my Dad and once when I went solo sailing. The mast was worse for wear and formed an S curve in several directions. We walked down the alley from my parents cottage and found telephone pole and a pine tree to use to try to straighten the mast. The mast was much improved, but still not completely straight when we were done.

On Memorial Day we went for a sail. Josh and I went 24 nautical miles. We put in at Butter Bean beach and were on the water for 5 hours and 30 minutes. It was slow going at first, so we had to enjoy a cigar.

Finally when we g to the Ossabaw the wind kicked up. We lifted up the motor and started sailing. The sailing going out was great. We were hitting 6+ knots with the wind on a close reach and having a wonderful time. We kept going until we hit the Atlantic. Orkia finally got a taste of Blue Water sailing.

Then we turned around and headed back. This was not as fun. I haven't got the sailing downwind down and it showed. The waves were rolling in behind us making it more difficult. And we were going against the current. Then the tiller broke and we decided to motor in. Not that much fun.

Finally when we were almost back in, Josh figured out how to fix the tiller and we used the main sail to help us get back in. Good thing because we were almost out of gas.

All in all a good day.
